For these ten enormous arches, each 23 ft. high X 16 ft. wide, Bynum made photographic enlargements of painting details. They are seen by viewers walking, driving, and from trains that run along the banks of the Hudson River between Grand Central Station in Manhattan and communities in the Hudson River Valley.

Life

This illuminated painting, 30 ft. wide x 12 ft. high on eight layers of glass, greets visitors to the new Institute for Science & Technology at Chapman University in Orange, California near Los Angeles. Using experimental fabrication and lighting technologies, the two-sided, semi-translucent sculptural painting is astronomically synced to the sunrise and rotates through five different light settings. The 1,000+ daily viewers are brought into an intimate relationship with the biological structure of our oneness and the interconnectedness of all life.

Life As We Know It

"Rise Above” was outlawed by U.S. Customs & Border Patrol (see CBP letter below) citing fears of shots fired at CBP officers by Mexican Cartels, along with concerns the Bluetooth audio-video connection would facilitate weapons smuggling from the U.S. to Mexico and drug smuggling from Mexico to the U.S..

Rise Above is a pair of lookout towers that face each other across the U.S.-Mexico border. Three times as high as the border fence, crowds gather on both sides of the border to take in the view, wave and enjoy performances. With the upper levels wired for sound, an audience in Douglas, AZ can watch and dance to a salsa band playing on the upper level in Agua Prieta, Mexico, or an audience in Agua Prieta might watch a play performed on the middle level in Douglas. The towers double as outdoor art galleries, with rotating exhibitions by local and internationally acclaimed artists.
